This Sunday my reflection wove together the parable of the watchful servants in Luke 12:35–38 with my recent experience of abundant hospitality in Indonesia.

The image of a master returning home and unexpectedly serving his servants is a vision of the “Great Reversal” — the overturning of status, privilege, and power in God’s reign. I connected this to the radical hospitality of my Indonesian hosts, the discomfort of receiving honour, and the challenge of embodying Christ’s way in a world of uncertainty, privilege, and inequality.

Ultimately, this gospel passage calls listeners:

  • to live as hopeful, watchful members of God’s household, shining like lamps in readiness for the coming Kingdom, and
  • to practise humility, service, and mutual honour in anticipation of God’s banquet of justice, peace, and joy.
